FAMILIES WITH TEENS AND YOUNG ADULTS

It is time…your child is becoming a teen; or your teen is about to start college; or you’re helping to launch a young adult.

These changes can be challenging, mostly because it feels as though you’re stepping on an accelerator and a brake at the same time! It can be so fulfilling and rewarding to watch your child (I know, “former toddler – just yesterday!”) develop and change. The fact that they can and want to evolve is normal and exactly what good parenting plans for.

But it’s going so quickly, maybe it feels too soon, or that one of you isn’t ready – yes, parents can NOT be ready for the planned inevitable.

Sometimes ambiguity is a mirror: developmental stages are challenging, necessary, welcome and scary – for both the child/teen/young adult and the parent/caregiver.

Talk about this with friends – you’re not alone! And if you find you need some objective observation and help with reflecting on these changes, then family, couple or individual therapy can be helpful. Please don’t hesitate to reach out! We can schedule some time to talk through your family’s transition, how you and your family feel about these changes and how to offer both authenticity and solid support to your teen or young adult.
