Engaged? Recently decided on a lifelong commitment?

And noticing that you and your partner may not agree on all aspects of your relationship?

Celebrant – referred?

Many of my clients first visited their clergy or other celebrant and issues arose that prompted a suggestion for pre-marital counseling.

First there is “I do” and then there is “We will”

Hyper-focus on the wedding or celebration is pretty typical. There are many decisions to make about how to make this “your day” for both of you – who will be involved, and how will you formalize your lifelong commitment? This is the part called “I do:” the ceremony and events.

Then comes BEING MARRIED, that starts just after “I do.” This is the “We will!” part: the rest of your life process after marriage.

Some couples notice that, as they plan, they do get to know each other even better than they thought – and may find frequent opportunities to successfully use their conflict resolution skills!

For other couples, this stage highlights some basic disagreements causing additional stress and revealing their struggle to resolve problems well together.

PREPARE FOR THE “WE WILL” WHILE YOU ARE PLANNING THE “I DO’S”

Premarital counseling will help you set the foundation for a lifetime of solid communication and mutual understanding.

There are TWO ways we can do premarital work together:

  • Premarital Program: A series of sessions, covering a wide variety of topics (and a Letter of Completion for your celebrant, if needed)
    • Increases self- and partner-awareness and enhances communication
    • Briefly explores family processes that lead you to the beliefs and expectations you have for your relationship
    • Covers the TOPICS ALL COUPLES SHOULD DISCUSS before they marry or make a lifelong commitment – (but very often do not)
  • Premarital counseling – Couples therapy:
    • Focuses on communication and conflict resolution
    • Helps the two of you work through solutions to problems that appear as you prepare to build the rest of your life together
    • Increases insight into the basis of your relationship concerns
